A flight leaves from Oakland to Dallas one morning on a 1200-mile flight?
On the way there, a tailwind helps them make their journey in only 2 hours. The return trip is made in stormy weather against a headwind three times as strong. If the return trip takes three hours, what is the speed of the wind during the flight from Dallas to Oakland

150 mph =] If x (the speed of the plane) plus y (the tailwind) times 2 (the time) is equal to 1200 (distance), then x + y = 600. Similarly, if 3 (x - 3y) = 1200, x - y = 400. Using simultaneous equations, we get that x = 550 and y = 50. Since the returning tailwind was 3x as strong, y = 3 (50) = 150 mph.

John, who answered , I wish I had half your brain. One variable is ATC and the time it takes can also be factored by the vectoring from way point to way point as well as air speed restrictions. That will add a few more X Y and Z to the equations!
