What is the probability that Martha will fly to Las Vegas exactly twice

What is the probability that Martha will fly to Las Vegas exactly twice?
Martha is a flight attendant stationed in Denver. Her assignments are rotated randomly between flights to Dallas; Seattle; Portland; and Las Vegas. Consider a success being a trip to Las Vegas. What is the probability that Martha will fly to Las Vegas exactly twice?

I assume you mean that she is flying 2 assignments, what is the probability that they are both to Vegas. Otherwise, you don't have enough information. There are 4 destinations, so the odds of going to any 1 destination is 1/4. The odds of going to that destination twice is (1/4)(1/4) = 1/16
2 :
1/4 * 1/4 = 1/16
3 :
Let X be the number of flight Martha has to vegas. X has the binomial distribution with n = 4 trials and success probability p = 0.25 In general, if X has the binomial distribution with n trials and a success probability of p then P[X = x] = n!/(x!(n-x)!) * p^x * (1-p)^(n-x) for values of x = 0, 1, 2, ..., n P[X = x] = 0 for any other value of x. The probability mass function is derived by looking at the number of combination of x objects chosen from n objects and then a total of x success and n - x failures. Or, in other words, the binomial is the sum of n independent and identically distributed Bernoulli trials. X ~ Binomial( n , p ) the mean of the binomial distribution is n * p = 1 the variance of the binomial distribution is n * p * (1 - p) = 0.75 the standard deviation is the square root of the variance = √ ( n * p * (1 - p)) = 0.8660254 The Probability Mass Function, PMF, f(X) = P(X = x) is: P( X = 0 ) = 0.3164063 P( X = 1 ) = 0.421875 P( X = 2 ) = 0.2109375 ← answer P( X = 3 ) = 0.046875 P( X = 4 ) = 0.00390625

does each airline has their own ground handlers at each airport the airline is flying

does each airline has their own ground handlers at each airport the airline is flying?
I mean, let's take the American flight from Dallas to Frankfurt with a B777. Is in Frankfurt the ground handler an AA-guy, or maybe a Lufthansa-guy, who is making all the ground work?

It really can be both. At airports where the airline has a lot of flights, it will most likely be an employee of that company. At stations that only see a few flights a day, a lot of times the airline will contract someone to perform the jobs. Hope this helps answer your question.
2 :
Hard to say. Some airlines use their people at their hub airports and contract out for other airports and some use their people and others contract out all their services.
3 :
The ground handler may work for the airline that leases the gate and that same gate might be shared by three different airlines or more. New landing slots are a rare and expensive and are a huge part of an airlines expenditures. Sharing them is cost effective. Every time an airliner lands it has to pay a fee to the airport. The friendly skies are not free. Part of that cost are directly reflected by the cost of your ticket.

As an accomapanying mechanic it depends on the airline like when i was flying the A340 to Sydney, Brisbane & Melbourne I do the groundhandling with the conditions that if ever I need to have spares and since Quantas flies to us courtesy they can lend us parts and after a while we teach them to handle A340 and then groundhandling was given to them. In Vancouver, Air Canada has A340 but since we have no bilateral agreement they never fly to us, but they offered their services in the end when the company sees it is more economical for the local to do the ground handling, it was given to them. It is the airline's choice but often host country also fly to the visitor so they either get it or another local with the same aircraft, type rated people will be given the contract. Also consideration is the number of flights if you have as much as two flights/day then mostly you have your own team to handle and office to keep spares in case of breakdown.

Most likely on American
2 :
You don't say where in Hawaii you are trying to go to. American does have nonstop from DFW-HNL and DFW-OGG. Prices appear to be about $960-$990, on kayak.com.
3 :
American Airlines has a direct flight from DFW to HLL. For example: ----------------- American Airlines Ticket$879.86 Taxes $37.20 Total $917.06 Depart – Tue Mar 3 2009 American Airlines Flight 123 Departs: 9:50a Dallas/ Ft Worth Intl (DFW) Arrives: 2:25p Honolulu (HNL) Coach | 763 (Wide-body Jet) | 8h 35m Return – Thu Mar 26 2009 This flight leaves on Thursday and arrives on Friday. American Airlines Flight 8 Departs: 5:55p Honolulu (HNL) Arrives: 6:10a Dallas/ Ft Worth Intl (DFW) Coach | 763 (Wide-body Jet) | 7h 15m
4 :
The price also depends on when you're departing. The further ahead you schedule your flight, the cheaper it is, usually.
